Big and large are adjective so I think it's no difference between the two word in grammar
but, there is a difference between the two is the noun behind them.
here are some sentances I searched in concordancer tool...
(big)
How big a problem is MOT certificate fraud?
An Awfully Big Adventure in which he plays
to be found in every big city and many country towns
(large)
But if they have won a very large amount
effort removing large amounts of sand and silt burying
I see a large amount of lottery money
based on some sentaces I found, I think the range of using "big" is very wide, It can adjective some thing real or not. but it not often using in counting noun. the "large" often using in something that is very large amount.

Good try, Masa. You're right, big could go with either concrete or abstract noun.
